Weather Forecasting

I completely understand that weather forecasting is based on science. I also understand that forecasts are not 100% because there are many variables involved. But, I do get annoyed when the forecast I hear is completely off base.

We were told that Saturday night we were to have possibly the worst winter storm of the year move through our area. Now, where I live, there was the potential that our weather could be diminished a bit based on whether or not there were storms to the south of us. I get that. I understand the butterfly effect.

Like you saw on my earlier picture of my dog, Saturday was gorgeous. Blue skies and sunny the entire day through. I did wake up about 3 am to some thunder & lightening, so looked outside and it appeared we were getting some rain/sleet. Only about 5-7 hours behind schedule. But, I was still trusting in the science.

Got up the next morning to a little more sleet falling. Forecasters were saying that the big snow was supposed to move in around noon. Yep, it was icy out for sure. Never did really get any snow. The entire storm was to finish up by early morning today. Ok, fine, I was still trusting the science even at this point.

So, here I am, noon on Monday, and it is snowing to beat the band outside. Snow has been falling since I got up at 6 am this morning. What??? Even this morning, the forecasters were saying that the snow was done and we were to have a fairly decent day. Science, shmience!!

Ok, what went wrong here. Again, I get that there are variables in play where the forecast changes. But, that's my issue here. At no time did the forecasters actually change the forecast. Even when I could see by looking outside that it wasn't bad, they were still forecasting doom & gloom. You know what I mean, Armageddon is here! Grab your kids and pets and head to the basement. Stock up on groceries so you can survive for days without any contact with the outside world. Yet, today, when it does appear to be doom & gloom outside, I'm getting the "all's clear" sign from the forecasters.

Sigh...guess it pays to stick our heads outside once in awhile. After all, isn't that how they forecasted weather back in the old days?

  1. Don't you love the Dodge commercial where snow starts to fall and people go crazy, grabbing stuff off shelves and driving out of control? Why do people act like that when the weather turns nasty?
