Birthdays - the good, the bad and the ugly

I alluded to this earlier this week, but figured I'd go ahead and embrace the inevitable.  Caleb and I are both celebrating our birthdays at the end of this week.  He turns 17 and I turn (drum roll please)..........40!  Yikes!

For some reason, I haven't always enjoyed my birthday.  Not sure why exactly.  Maybe I hate being the center of attention.  Or maybe I just have too high of expectations for the actual day.  For some reason, though, I have had a rough relationship with July 24th for quite some time.

It hasn't always been that way, though.  Those of you who really know me well, know that I have very fond memories of a birthday party from when I was a lot younger.  I really have no clue how I old I was turning, but I remember the most wonderful birthday party with my friends at the Akron city park.  I remember decorating ice cream cone cupcakes and getting a little sick to my stomach on all the frosting.

My family recreated this experience for me this summer in the Black Hills.  They surprised me with a great party - all the way down to the ice cream cone cupcakes.  Honestly, I think I enjoyed it even more this time around.

Another favorite birthday was when Caleb was born.  Granted, who likes being in the hospital on their birthday?  It was truly magical though.  Caleb was born at about noon on July 23rd, so by the time my birthday came around I was feeling pretty good.  I gave birth to him at Sacred Heart in Yankton and the nuns made me a very special birthday cake to celebrate the day.

So, even though my birthdays haven't always produced fond memories, I have a few great ones to hold on to.  And, yes, I plan on having many more opportunities for great birthdays in the future!
