I was a waitress for over 9 years of my life, so customer service is very important to me and absolutely expected when I enter a store or speak to someone over the phone. Now, don’t assume I’m expecting me to show good customer service – this ALWAYS happens, remember I was trained (not unlike Pavlov’s dogs) to be nice for money. Instead I expect positivity from the person I am approaching either by phone or in person. I really so no reason not to demonstrate good customer service. I guess if you have someone rude talking to you, you do have some right to be rude back. But, I’m never rude! Or at least I don’t think I am. Now, I might be a bit stupid or ask a really silly question, but that doesn’t give someone the right to be disrespectful.
Now, I imagine that you are wondering where this is going. Well, let me tell you! I spoke to the rudest librarian on the phone this afternoon! Seriously – this person was so rude to me that you’d think I had asked her to shave her head or something. I was only calling to reserve a meeting room for the Discover Together book club that I facilitate. How hard is that? I was even prepared by knowing exactly what room I wanted and I had my library card number all ready to give her. I won’t go into the details, but let’s just say that she had to have strained herself to even talk to me. So, in keeping with my extensive training from my waitressing days, I started getting really syrupy nice to her. I’m sure that anyone listening in to the call probably thought I was very odd. Well, they also might think that anyway…
Outcome – I got my room reserved, but not without a lot of work on my end. And, I don’t even get paid for it! Where is my tip? What did I get for an incentive for all that work? I’m sure this person doesn’t get paid too much to do her job, but it can’t be all that bad. I was calling the new library, so we know that her office area is absolutely gorgeous. And, she is surrounded by books and book lovers all day. Anyway, I just find it hard to understand why customer service is not always an automatic response. I guess some people just have something stuck up their tushies.

Sometimes the syrupy attitude does not work to get them to turn around. After so many years it's amazing how we can "read" people. The other day I had a phone conversation with a very rude older lady (you can always tell on the phone) and I wasn't super sweet, just very firm with her. She totally turned around and became nice and thankful for the help. She was blaming the store for a missing credit to her Visa, but when I was asking for information, she couldn't give it. I think she realized she couldn't be so insistent until her facts were straight.
