Yes, for mother's day, we watched the new Michael Moore movie, Capitalism, A Love Story. Such an odd choice, but both Caleb and I enjoy his movies. I won't get into the whole political debate of capitalism vs. socialism, but I do want to say that I did enjoy this movie. I always like how Moore highlights the underdog in his films. He did a good job of bringing out the personal side of the financial struggles.
I talk with Caleb a lot about how important it is for him to voice his opinion. Yes, we all suffer for this with him because he never gives up a fight :), but I am really proud to have raised a young man with conviction. I hope that he will learn at some point that it is just as important to consider the other side of the argument, too!
This film did a good job of demonstrating the importance of standing up for what we believe in. While Moore showed examples relating to the economic issues in the U.S., I felt that the ultimate message could be applied to whatever a person believed in. I'm not sure of the exact quote, but Moore makes a reference to the rich getting scared because the "peasants" stood up and said no! After the film was done, Caleb and I talked about how his voice is just as important as the rich person's, especially when it comes to voting.
So, as a mother, it was comforting to watch this type of a movie with my child to celebrate the day. I want my son to know that his voice can be heard and that he can make a change if he truly believes in it. Let's just hope he uses that voice to do some good instead of annoying his future wife with endless arguements - ha ha!
